Copper Ethernet Providers
The general rule for availability is that the customer’s business location must be within 9000 feet of the point of presence (POP) of a provider that offers ethernet over copper for that area. This usually narrows availability of ethernet over copper to customers who are in urban areas. Although it is not available to all business locations at this time, ethernet over copper provides extreme savings to customers who are within range. Ethernet over copper is extremely reliable, and carries the same service level guarantees as other forms of internet or private data services, such as T1, or DS3. Copper ethernet not only provides extreme savings in monthly cost, but because it is provided over copper telephone lines that are available to virtually all business locations, it can often be installed free, with none of the costly build-out charges often required by the special wiring needed to provide DS3. Ethernet over ds1 is a cost effective alternative for customers who are beyond the 9000 foot limitation required by ethernet over copper. Ethernet over ds1 is not available to all locations, but does have a far greater reach than EOC, and often costs about half of what the equivalent bandwidths of bonded t1 or fractional ds3. Because ethernet over DS1 is provided over copper wire (telephone lines) as well, it can often be provided with no installation charges, or the expensive build-out charges required by fractional or full DS3. Ethernet over copper and ethernet over ds1 are compatible with each other as well as ds1 (t1), bonded t1 or ds3 for networking multiple locations with MPLS (multiprotocol label switching). Ethernet is also extremely effective for high bandwidth internet access and point-to-point connections. Modern VPNs
Writen by: Dennis Green
Virtual private networks (VPNs) utilize major advancements in technology to establish secure private communication channels, for the transfer of data, over shared networks such as private intranets or the internet. Currently, the most popular and state-of–the-art virtual private networks are based on MPLS (multiprotocol label switching). MPLS provides any-to-any connectivity over T1 or higher bandwidth. The best MPLS networks are facilitated within the closed systems of specific tier 1 providers. With this scenario, MPLS networks are as secure as point-to-point circuits. With quality of service (QoS), MPLS networks are extremely well suited for transmitting voice, priority files, multiple location audio or videoconferencing, or high quality video transmission. For two location networks, a point-to-point private line continues to be a bit less expensive than a MPLS virtual private network. However, point-to-point lines are not normally managed by providers, so with point-to-point lines, obtaining customer premise equipment, and configuring and maintaining the equipment is the responsibility of the end user. For multiple location networks, or two location networks which you know will increase in number of locations, MPLS can be far more functional, and far less expensive than a network comprised of point-to-point lines. In most cases, full T1 or DS3 MPLS VPNs are provided with all needed hardware, installation, configuration and management of the network by the provider for about the same cost, or just slightly more, per location, than managed internet service. Managed MPLS networks are pretty much turn key for the end user. There are also a variety of options for networking DSL or Cable service as well. As the authorized sales agents for the top 20 telecom providers in the country, we can provide free comparative quotes for completely managed virtual private networks for any locations in the US, regardless of the bandwidth needed at each location. We can also provide quotes for international VPNs (including MPLS options as well). (Click here to return to top of page)
