Copper Ethernet Providers
The general rule for availability is that the customer’s business location must be within 9000 feet of the point of presence (POP) of a provider that offers ethernet over copper for that area. This usually narrows availability of ethernet over copper to customers who are in urban areas. Although it is not available to all business locations at this time, ethernet over copper provides extreme savings to customers who are within range. Ethernet over copper is extremely reliable, and carries the same service level guarantees as other forms of internet or private data services, such as T1, or DS3. Copper ethernet not only provides extreme savings in monthly cost, but because it is provided over copper telephone lines that are available to virtually all business locations, it can often be installed free, with none of the costly build-out charges often required by the special wiring needed to provide DS3. Ethernet over ds1 is a cost effective alternative for customers who are beyond the 9000 foot limitation required by ethernet over copper. Ethernet over ds1 is not available to all locations, but does have a far greater reach than EOC, and often costs about half of what the equivalent bandwidths of bonded t1 or fractional ds3. Because ethernet over DS1 is provided over copper wire (telephone lines) as well, it can often be provided with no installation charges, or the expensive build-out charges required by fractional or full DS3. Ethernet over copper and ethernet over ds1 are compatible with each other as well as ds1 (t1), bonded t1 or ds3 for networking multiple locations with MPLS (multiprotocol label switching). Ethernet is also extremely effective for high bandwidth internet access and point-to-point connections. Benefits of Dynamic Integrated T1 over Channelized T1
Writen by: Dennis Green
Dynamic integrated T1 provides many benefits over other forms of T1. These advantages include the combination of both phone service, as well as internet service on one T1 circuit for a price which is similar to full internet t1, or a voice t1 circuit. This benefit is especially useful for small to medium sized companies which need both voice and internet t1, but only have the budget for one T1 line. A second benefit of dynamic integrated is that it allows access to all data “channels” at all times, regardless of whether phones are in use or not. With dynamic integrated, the entire T1 (1544 kilobits per second (kbps)) defaults to internet duties. As phones are used, bandwidth is assigned in real-time and with priority to each phone conversation. This prioritization ensures that the quality of voice traffic is not jeopardized by routine data traffic. Once each phone call is ended, the bandwidth allocated to that call is returned in real-time to internet duties, thus increasing the speed of access to and from the internet. Dynamic integrated T1 is the state-of-the-art version of integrated T1. It’s predecessor, channelized t1 was nowhere near as flexible and included much bandwidth wastage. For example, with channelized integrated, each of the 24 channels (64 kbps each) which make up a T1 circuit, is assigned to either voice or internet. I.e. 12 channels assigned as voice lines, and 12 channels (768 kbps) assigned to internet traffic. With this scenario, all data assigned to voice traffic, cannot be accessed for internet usage, without major reconfiguration. For this reason, when phones are not being used, all bandwidth allocated to the phones sits idol. Although dynamic integrated requires on premise equipment worth about $4000, this equipment and installation is provided for only a few hundred dollars by most telecom providers if the customer is willing to commit to a two year contract, and the equipment and installation are usually provided for free if the customer is willing to commit to a three year contract. Other benefits of dynamic integrated often include unlimited local and long distance usage (even in metered areas), up to 5000 minutes of toll free service per month, and online portal access, so that phone features can be accessed and revised in real-time by the customer. Several providers are now offering dynamic integrated t1 on bonded T1 circuits. Also, PRI is now available with dynamic integrated. (Click here to return to top of page)
